Bonneville RX-7

We receive many questions regarding the current location of the 1993 RX-7 that we prepared for the Bonneville Land Speed Record challenge. We have been tracking the location of this car over the years.

Mazda provided this RX-7 to us for racing use with the intention that it be returned when the project was completed. The race car was prepared by us in 1991 and testing continued until the summer of 1992. The car was painted white with the traditional Racing Beat red & blue graphics for the upcoming land speed record attempt at Bonneville Land Speedway. During this event, with Racing Beat's Jim Mederer at the wheel, the car went airborne at about 240 MPH. Captured by a Japanese film crew, this footage was later appeared in Japan on an Options video tape. Repairs were made and the car was repainted black for the for the 1993 event. Summer rains forced the cancellation of the 1993 and 1994 Bonneville events, but the car did establish a speed record of 204 MPH at El Mirage Dry Lake (CA) in 1994. Finally, in 1995 the car produced a Bonneville record of 242 MPH.

After the record was set, the car made a trip to Japan for the show circuit. The car was returned to the US where it was placed on display in the Mazda corporate lobby. Later, the car was displayed at the Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles.

In 2000, a Racing Beat customer informed us that the car was on display in the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Michigan. A year later, we learned that the car was returned to Mazda R&D in Irvine, CA to be used in the promotion of the RX-8. It has subsequently appeared several of the Sevenstock events held in Irvine, CA. The car looked great and only required a few gallons of fuel and a "jump start" before firing back to life.

However, prior to the 2003 Sevenstock event it was discovered that the seals on the engine were failing and it would be unwise to run the engine. The car is still in the possession of Mazda, and will eventually make a return visit to the Racing Beat facility for an engine rebuild.

In 2008 we were approached by several film companies in Hollywood that expressed interest in using the Bonneville crash footage in various "the crashed and walked away" reality shows. The footage was later shown on "Whacked Out Sports" and the History Channel's "Shockwave".

As of 2010 the record of 242 MPH was still standing - 15 years after the record attempt!
