Many performance enthusiasts think that the surest way to improve the braking performance on their vehicle is to first upgrade to a fancy set of slotted or drilled rotors. While these parts certainly look great when seen through the spokes of your wheels, don't overlook the importance of the brake pads in your brake package - upgrading to a set of performance street pads can provide a significant improvement in braking performance!
Understanding brake pad technology can be a confusing undertaking with aftermarket manufacturers using exotic sounding names and compounds in their brake pads and all claiming theirs to be "the best". So what do you use? The stock Mazda pads? Generic pads from the auto parts store? Performance pads? Brake pad technology has progressed to the point where the stock and generic aftermarket pads typically offer a reasonable combination of long life, low dust and noise and are well-suited for daily use. Performance pads offer a higher coefficient of friction as compared with the stock or generic pads and may provide 20-40% (or more) stopping power, with a higher resistance to brake fad.
Brake pads have been designed to operate within a specific heat range as determined by each manufacturer. While most street driven vehicles operate with brake compound temperatures in the 100-500 degree range, performance driving may send these temps soaring to over 700 degrees, and racing/track applications exceeding 1000+ degrees. Selecting a pad to operate within the heat performance range is of critical importance. For street applications for the Mazda 6, we recommend the use of Hawk HPS Pads, or for autocross use we suggest HP Plus.
Performance pads typically requires an easy-to-perform break in procedure to ensure quality braking performance over the life of the pad. The procedure requires a series of start-and-stop sequences to bring the pads to the optimal operating temperature, which then allows the pads to create a transfer-film layer of friction material over the rotor surface. This process allows the brake pad material to contact against itself rather than the metal rotor surface. This process increases stopping performance and may increase pad and rotor life. HPS Street Compound
The Hawk HPS pads feature are an excellent street brake compound that provides an ideal upgrade over an OEM-type pad. Much improved stopping power over OEM and standard replacement pads, these pads offer low dust, low noise, minimal rotor wear, and reasonable pad wear.
