1999-2003 Protege Tokico Illumina Adjustable Shock - Front Right (BB-2223). Price listed is for one (1) HP Standard front shock.
For the serious driver who wishes to improve the Protege's handling, Tokico offers a higher level of suspension performance. Tokico is one of the world's largest manufacturers of shock absorbers for both original and high performance applications. Tokico offers the Protege enthusiast the option of either the Illumina series (white) - externally adjustable shocks, or the HP Series (blue) - non-adjustable shocks.
Tokico's Illumina is a 5 position externally adjustable strut. The easy, under-the-hood adjustment, changes both rebound and compression damping simultaneously. It allows drivers to change balance, overall handling, or ride quality with a turn of a dial. The dial and indented positioning indicator gives the driver the means to know exactly the position the shocks are set. These shocks are gas-filled and will offer the Protege enthusiast improved handling and road holding performance.
Racing Beat worked extensively with Tokico on the development of the shocks that were incorporated into the suspension of both the 2001 Protege MP3 and 2003 MazdaSpeed models. Tokico engineers worked side-by-side with Racing Beat's chief engineer Jim Mederer in order to optimize the performance of the Tokico shock with the Protege's performance suspension. During the development of the suspension, it was determined that the endlink mounting flange on the side of the shock body would require additional strengthening. The stress placed on the small, stock flange was determined to be inadequate for use with a larger aftermarket sway bar. Tokico developed a more substantial flange on the MP3 and MazdaSpeed models, and to the benefit of the aftermarket, they incorporated this same design into their aftermarket shocks.
For this reason, Racing Beat only recommends the Mazda OEM MP3/Mazdaspeed shocks, or the general release Tokico aftermarket shocks for use with aftermarket sway bar sets.
