Initial shock development for the MP3 were conducted with KONI USA. Due to the fact that the shocks would require additional modifications and, Mazda decided to use Tokico Shocks, one of their OEM suppliers. Per Mazda's requirements, Tokico was also able to equip each shock with a "high-speed cutoff" feature, which inhibits the shocks ability to "bottom-out" under extreme and sudden loading.

To aid in the final tuning of the production shocks, Mr. Shinichi Kagawa, Tokico Senior Design Department Engineer, was flown from Japan to lend his talents. After several days of on-car testing, the final production setting were selected.
