Rear Counterweight - 1974-82 12A Engines - All automatic transmission-configured Mazda rotary engines are equipped with a rear counterweight as shown. The counterweight serves as both a critical engine balancing component and as an attachment point for the automatic transmission flex plate. Racing Beat included these various counterweights with our lightweight and steel flywheels to maintain correct engine balance. (On the OEM manual transmission flywheel, a "counterweight" feature is cast into the flywheel and is a non-removable component.)

We off these Mazda counterweights separately for special projects or as a replacement unit. Mis-matching a counterweight to the wrong engine application will result in an out-of-balance rotating assembly, engine damage, and possible injury or death. It is critical to match the counterweight to the specific engine rotors being used!
