Racing Beat is an authorized dealer for the complete line of Motec engine management systems and related equipment. Although there are many options for complete engine management systems for the rotary engine, one important reason for our preference of the Motec product line was the offering of the Motec M2R ECU. This ECU is a more cost efficient version of the venerable M4 and is specifically intended for use on 2-rotor engines. Although the selection and integration of an electronic engine management is certainly not inexpensive, we’ve attempted to assemble a comprehensive and cost effective package specifically intended for use only on a rotary engine.

For many years we’ve noted just how difficult it has been for the rotary enthusiast to make the conversion from a carburetor set-up to a fuel injected configuration. Although there are many available engine management components available from a number of suppliers, technical support for the rotary engine enthusiast has been rather limited. Racing Beat has attempted to take much of the “mystery” out of the selection process and offers a complete, customized package system that is fully integrated for your specific engine, while minimizing your initial start-up tuning efforts, reducing costs, and saving valuable time.

To further ease the transition from carburetion to complete engine management systems, Racing Beat will continue to develop "packages" of components and programming specifically designed to function with the M2R ECU to allow you to configure an engine, start it, and run the engine without having to resort to a long development process on an engine dyno. You can literally start an engine, warm it up and drive away! Of course, you will have to make small adjustments from our suggested starting point, but we supply the information to help you successfully accomplish this task. It would still be wise to utilize a chassis dynamometer to "fine tune" your exact engine, but you will find our recommended components and settings to be VERY close right out-of-the-box. The settings we deliver will be slightly “conservative” but very close to ideal, with detailed instructions that will help you get the most from your engine. The pre-loading of software and settings is done at no extra cost - you only pay the normal price for the parts.

Racing Beat-configured ECU Packages

  1. Standardized Components
  2. Ease of initial start-up - preprogrammed by Racing Beat
  3. Expert consultation

As stated above, this project requires selection of specific components for your exact engine application and usage. Typical prices for a complete ECU system range between $2500-$5000 (including a custom wiring harness), depending on the selected components. Options to the base system are the availability of data logging & advanced functions modules, wide band lamba module and sensor, fuel injectors, and ignition coils. If you are seriously interested in obtaining a complete system, we will personally work with you to assist in the selection of the correct components for your application at no additional cost.

Racing Beat has been using stand-alone engine management systems for the rotary engine since 1984. Currently, we are focusing on a complete package offering for the 2-rotor peripheral port 13B racing engine since we believe this is the most popular application for customers to adapt the Motec system. Over time, we MAY expand our offerings to include other engine configurations, as demand requires.

Bosch Wide Band Sensor LSM-11 (1 each) M 0258-002 $350.00
* Note: The standard M2R ECU includes 6 hours of logging and lambda recording. Additional recording requires the use of these optional components. We highly recommend these optional components, especially the data logging feature when being used in a racing application.
Other Required Components for 13B Peripheral Port Engine
Ignition Options*: Estimated Price
M&W Capacitive Discharge (CDI) Ignition M CDI-4 M&W $1300.00
CDI Coils (4 required) M CDI 551 $125.00 ea
Mazda RX-8 Ignition Coils (4 required) Mazda

*Other ignition options are possible, but are untested by Racing Beat. The RX-8 Ignition Coils operate effectively and produce nearly the same power as the CDI units, but lack the reserve power of the CDI when some setting or condition is not ideal. If you select to use the RX-8 coils, mount them so they receive direct cooling air to prevent them from overheating.

Anyone who has studied engine management systems for the first time is soon overwhelmed by the number of choices - ECUs, injectors, sensors, ignitions, pumps, etc. - and the complexity of the software configuration necessary to make these components successfully work together well. Our intention is to "standardize" these items as much as possible by offering a "package" of components and settings that we have proven work well together. We will accommodate some customer choices within these packages, but options are limited. This allows us to control inventory and ensure that we can answer questions relating to these components. Of course, if you require a specific component that you believe is important for your application we will attempt to accommodate you, but we will not have the depth of experience with alternate components, and our level of technical assistance may be limited. Please keep this in mind if you wish to use components not part of our "standardized" offerings.
