This photo shows the Racing Beat RX-7 charging around the high banks of the Daytona International Speedway during the 1983 24 Hours of Daytona followed closely by a Dan Gurney Racing Toyota Celica. Although the Racing Beat RX-7 was competing in the GTO (over 2.5 liter engine displacement) class, this powerful RX-7 was able to muscle its way up through the field. Although the faster, more powerful GTP cars could outrun the RX-7, attrition forced many of the GTP cars to retire, sending the RX-7 closer and closer to the front of the field.
After a long, grueling night run, and an early morning run-in with a slower GTU (under 2.5 liter engine displacement car), the Racing Beat RX-7 pushed on to a 1st in class win, and a 3rd place overall finish!
This RX-7 has been raced by private teams in Puerto Rico for many years and is slated for a complete overhaul with a return to the original Racing configuration and color-scheme.
